How to choose an EHR for a small practice
EHRs for solo and small practices, with built-in AI, e-prescribing (EPCS), telehealth and billing compared.
- List your must-haves: prescribing (including EPCS and PDMP if you prescribe controlled substances), telehealth, insurance billing or cash-pay, intake forms, and note templates for your specialty.
- Count real users and volume: providers who prescribe, non-clinical staff, claims per month. Many EHRs price per prescriber, per seat, per claim or as a percentage of collections.
- Total the real monthly cost: base plan plus ePrescribe, EPCS/PDMP setup, AI notes, premium telehealth, claim fees and payment processing.
- Confirm a BAA covers the exact plan and add-ons you will use, and get data-export terms in writing before you sign.
- Trial two or three finalists with a mock schedule: book, intake, document, prescribe (test environment), bill and export.
- Plan the switch: data migration, a cutover date, staff training, and keeping read-only access to your old system.
